Bridge Trivia
‘Old London Bridge stood from 1209 to 1831.
The bridge was lined with shops and houses and even had its own chapel.
In 1390 a joust was held on the bridge to prove who were more courageous, the English or the Scots. The Scottish knight won.
Traitors’ heads were put on spikes at the gateway on the Southwark end of the bridge. As many as 34 heads were displayed at one time. They were the responsibility of the ‘Keeper of the Heads’.
