July 15 in comedy London Fringe New Comedy Award Judging & Lineups, Skinkers Wine Bar, July 14, 15, 16 Here's how we intend to do the judging: Paul Ricketts, who is MC'ing the night, and Greg Tallent will be judges, and we'll pick one more judge from the audience. At the end of the night each will pick who they think is the best comic. If someone gets two votes that person is the winner. If the judges pick different people, then Greg gets the casting vote. At the end of the 3rd night, we'll have three winners, one from each night, and as only Paul and Greg will have judged them all, it'll be between the two of them to decide the overall winner. If they don't agree, then Greg gets to choose, since he was the one who got the flyers done. Seems fair. We are still taking entries and will add on more showcases if necessary to ensure that we see as many acts perform live as possible. We've got 3 competition nights lined up at the Skinkers Pub, right next to the London Dungeon, for July 14, 15 and 16. Here's how it will work: Paul Ricketts will be the MC. There'll be a prize of £100 to the winner and a possible professional gig, yet to be confirmed. But, I think it's more about the prestige of winning an award in London. We'll be judging each night, and will announce a winner for each group of comedians at the end of each night, and the overall winner after the last night. There is no final competition, so there's only one shot at it. This is because, in keeping with the spirit of the Festival, we want as many people as possible to enter. There won't be a charge at the door, but we will ask for donations from the audience, a la the Free Fringe. The money we collect will go towards buying the comics a drink at the bar. So, we're running both a Comedy Award and a Free Fringe in the Festival. He goes on to say that there have been about 40 men who have made their name to one woman. But what he fails to mention is that the London Comedy Store has hosted six sell out finals of the Funny Women Awards and showcased over 60 new female comedy acts on its stage. This year, the heats are going to be held in the Festival on 11th, 16th, 18th, 23rd, and 25th July and will take place at the Wheatsheaf Pub, The Hop Exchange, 24 Southwark Street, London SE1. The final will be later this year. Lynne Parker, who runs Funny Women, is looking for new talent. The competition is open to any woman who can perform stand up in front of a live audience. Last year the competition attracted over 250 entrants. E-mail and website May 30 in comedy |

| Times Saturday review: "It seems there is nothing not being attempted during the ambitious, two-week run of the first London Bridge Festival, a would-be attempt at the capital's version of the Edinburgh Fringe. Comedy, film, art, dance, music - you name it, it's happening. That might suggest that the quality control knob has been torn off and tossed into the Thames - happily, it hasn't. Drawing heavily on the historic locale, there will be plays at the Rose Theatre, Bankside (home to early works by Shakespeare and Marlowe), the Southwark Playhouse, and the wonderful Old Operating Theatre, a museum that does what it says on the tin, housing the oldest operating Theatre in London. It's well worth getting along to see something as well as the shows, the locations are a knockout. Various venues, London Bridge. " |
